ladylostris: sunset with the words in white, "wait and hope" (identify a werewolf)
How to go from to using GIMP 2.2.

I wrote this up because of a question asked by [livejournal.com profile] myannarose.

Go from to using the GIMP 2.2. Should be translatable.

1. Start with your base. I cropped and resized this image to a 100x100 base:

2. Duplicate your base twice. Set the first one to Overlay 100% and the second to Grain Merge 100%. This lightens up the background and emphasizes the subject.

3. Add a new layer. Flood fill it with e50b00 (red) and set it to Overlay 100%. This adds a little color to the subject.

4. Add a new layer. Flood fill it with f8ca34 (orangish yellow) and set it to Multiply 100%. This provides the color for the image. For this step, feel free to use a different color.

5. Add this texture by [livejournal.com profile] gypsymc813 and set it to Multiply 100%. This adds the texture without changing the color.

6. Optional: Add text, brushes, etc. I used Scriptina size 19 in color 000000 (black).

And you're done!

Go from to or using the GIMP 2.

1. Prepare your base (crop, sharpen, etc.)

2. Duplicate your base and desaturate it.

3. Make a new layer and flood fill it with ffffff, set to Overlay 100%. This lightens it up a little.

4. Make a new layer and flood fill it with 19abbc, set to Overlay 100%, to add a little color.

5. Add this texture * as a new layer set to Overlay 100%.

6. Add this texture * as a new layer set to Overlay 100%.

And you're done! Merge layers, flatten image, add text/brushes, etc.

Optional: Add a layer of b1a5a5 at Overlay 100% after the desaturated layer to lighten it up a little. (Layers would be base, desaturated base, b1a5a5, ffffff, 19abbc, texture 1, texture 2).

Go from to using GIMP 2. Should be translatable.

1. Duplicate the base. Set it to Overlay 100%. (This makes the colors more like what they're supposed to be.)

2. Duplicate the base again. Set this to Value at 100%. (This tones down the colors a little but still leaves them looking more natural.)

3. Make a new layer. Fill with b1a5a5 (gray). Set to Overlay 100%. (This lightens the image a little.)

4. Duplicate that layer. (This lightens it a little more.)

5. Make new layer. Fill with ffffff (white). Set it to Overlay 100%. This really lightens up the image and makes the colors more vibrant.

6. At this point, the image looks a little washed out due to the white layer. Make a new layer. Fill it with 19abbc (teal). Set to Overlay 80%. (This adds a teal tint to the icon, making it look less washed out, and lowering the opacity makes the color not too overwhelming. This also works well with the white layer below it.)

And you're done!

Note: For black and white images (such as this: ) it may work best to leave out the second copy of the base (skip step 2) and the white layer (skip step 5). Leaving out the white layer keeps the image from being too light. The last layer (step 6) is at 100% opacity instead of 80%.

Other examples using this technique (some with slight modifications):

This is my first tutorial. Let me know if it helps you or if it's confusing.

I'd like to see your results too, if you feel like sharing.

I played around with the GIMP again today (because I didn't want to get back to my paper yet, of course), and I came up with a very simple-to-make Friends Only banner.

I went from this ) to this:
in four simple steps.

1. Duplicate base, set to Dodge, 100%.

2. Duplicate that layer, set to Addition, 100%.

3. Add text. I used Essays1743 Bold from www.dafont.com. (The Essays1743 font includes a couple of different styles of the font).

4. Flatten image (if you want to save it as a JPEG), or merge visible layers, and save.

Et voila!
